Sedation Dentistry in Houston
For some people, a simple visit to the dentist brings on panic attacks so severe that even twice-yearly checkups and cleanings are virtually impossible. If you are among these people, sedation dentistry can help you overcome your fear and get the regular dental care you need.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry uses a mild oral sedative or nitrous oxide to create a floaty, dream-like state so that you can go through your dental appointment without any anxiety or discomfort at all. Using sedation dentistry, dental problems that have been neglected due to your fear can be easily dealt with. If you have multiple issues, such as several cavities or teeth that must be extracted, they often can all be treated in a single session, thus saving you additional, stressful trips to the dentist.
When you arrive at the dentist’s office, you will receive an oral sedative, or nitrous will be administered while you’re in the dental chair. If you use oral sedation, you’ll need to arrange to have someone bring you home, since the sedative will remain in your system for a few hours. Nitrous oxide, by contrast, clears the system fairly quickly, so you’ll likely be able to drive yourself home if this option is used.
For procedures such as fillings, crowns, or extractions, a local anesthetic is also used to eliminate pain. The anesthetic will not be administered, however, until the sedative or nitrous oxide has taken effect.
Sedation Dentistry vs. Sleep Dentistry
While some people use these terms interchangeably, it’s important to know the difference, and to be sure which approach your dentist uses.
Sedation dentistry does not make you unconscious. You will be aware of what’s going on around you during your visit, and you will be able to respond to the dentist’s directions and questions. However, you will be anxiety-free, and time will seem to pass more quickly.
True sleep dentistry involves general anesthesia. While general anesthesia is often used for dental surgery, it is not recommended for routine dental work. Because general anesthesia affects the entire body, it carries a number of risks, including:
- Changes in blood pressure
- Heart arrhythmia
- Allergic reactions to the anesthetic
- Decrease in body temperature
- In severe cases, heart attack, stroke or even death
For these reasons, a light sedative or nitrous oxide is a much safer choice to help alleviate dental anxiety.
